Welcome to the Golf Server. Here we will teach you the basics about golf. First let's talk about ratings.
Course Rating and Slope Rating
The USGA course rating is the value given to each set of tees at a golf course to approximate the number of strokes it should take for a scratch golfer, or a golfer that should shoot for par every round, to complete the course. For example, a set of tees with a course rating of 75.8 would mean that a scratch golfer would be expected to shoot about a 76 from those tees. 75.8 is a high course rating, but most courses have a rating ranging from the upper 60s to the mid 70s. Each set of tees on a course has its own course rating.
The slope rating on a golf course is a measurement of difficulty of the course for a bogey golfer, or a golfer that should shoot 18 over every round, relative to the course rating. The minimum slope rating a course can have is 55 and the maximum it can have is 155. A noticeable difference between the course rating and the slope rating is that the slope rating doesn't relate to the number of strokes played, unlike the course rating. As I have mentioned before, the average slope rating is 113. But like the course rating, there is a specific slope rating for each set of tees. The slope rating is a key component in determining your handicap index and your course handicap and it's most meaningful purpose is leveling the playing field for players with different skill sets.
